OPEN CALL!

2023

For an artist residency of two months in Loviisa including work with a local school and art teacher. The residency period should take place between August and November 2023.

Loviisa is a small town on the coast, a bilingual community with a small but dynamic art scene. We wish to broaden our horizons and welcome initiatives that leave a lasting trace. The residency is in an apartment in the city center with a shared studio space (see more info below) at a five minute walking distance from the school.

The residency is free, travel expenses are covered up to 200 € (negotiable up to 400 € in certain cases) and an artist fee of up to 2000 € for the whole working period will be provided by local funding that supports the work of artists in schools. We are looking for a workshop of altogether 5 x 90 minutes, repeated for four different groups. Contemporary themes are preferred. Methods can range from site-specific art to poster design or filmmaking. Basic art class materials are included, additional materials negotiable.

We wish to see some activity on social media at least once a week. An artist talk or open workshop to connect with the local community will be held. Depending on what is produced in the workshops, an exhibition or similar will be organized.

Background:

Art as a school subject encompasses all visual culture. Students aged 13-15 in grades 7-9 have one 90 minute art class per week while older students aged 16-18 have 2-3 classes per week. The older students have courses with an emphasis on certain themes, such as architecture and design or contemporary art.

A project would ideally take place over 4-6 weeks, leaving time for other work. The work will take place during school hours. Whole day workshops can occasionally be arranged when planned well ahead.

The language of the school is Swedish. The workshops can be held in Swedish or in English.

Art teacher Helena Björk will be present during the workshops. She has worked with contemporary art as a curator and with educational projects that involve encounters – between people, artworks and sites. School projects with artists have focus on dialogue and shared processes.

Application:

Please submit, in a single pdf-file: your CV, 3-5 images of works, a project proposal that states the core themes of the work and a material budget. Knowing the themes of the work helps us in integrating the work into the school curriculum. You may also request a specific age group to work with. Details of the work, such as the exact schedule and materials, can be planned later.

Applicants will be notified in April. The residency with the invited artist will be confirmed by the end of June when funding is secured.

Send your application, including CV, portfolio, and one page text to: art@artinlov.org
